Description

To meet the increasing demand for aluminium products, the industry requires solutions to upgrade mixed aluminium packages into segregated series or alloys. LIBS technology will play a crucial role in this process, enabling more recovered aluminium to be utilized at its highest value.

LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) is a technology that analyzes materials based on their elemental composition. A high-energy laser beam vaporizes the surface of the material, creating a plasma that emits characteristic light as it breaks down. Spectral analysis of these light emissions allows for precise identification of the material's elemental composition, enabling the separation of different aluminium series and alloys.

LIBS technology is typically combined with X-ray transmission (XRT) technology, such as the STEINERT XSS T EVO 5.0 or STEINERT KSS XT | CLI. In post-consumer material streams, XRT is used to remove heavy metals, compound materials, and cast aluminium, leaving behind clean wrought aluminium for further processing.

How metal recyclers can benefit from LIBS technology:

Instead of producing mixed Zorba or Twitch packages, processors can efficiently and cost-effectively extract valuable wrought aluminium series and alloys from their streams.
