RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, has become the first foreign company to receive the China Green Power Aluminium Certificate.
The China Green Product Evaluation Centre awarded RUSAL the official certificate during a special event in Shanghai on July 2, 2024. The document confirms that 50,000 tonnes of aluminium ingot produced by RUSAL's Bratsk Aluminium Smelter (BrAZ) comply with the Green Power Aluminium Certification requirements.
Since green power aluminium evaluation work started on June 20, 2023, it has garnered attention from primary aluminium producers and downstream, receiving robust support from all sectors. As of June 30 this year, the evaluation centre has conducted qualitative evaluations and quantitative assessments of the primary aluminium from 34 enterprises using green electricity. The total volume of evaluated green power aluminium reached approximately 3 million tonnes.
The CNIA Green Product Evaluation Centre Director commented, "We are glad to see that RUSAL aligns with our principles and progresses in tandem with us. RUSAL's products, upon evaluation and certification, will offer Chinese customers low-carbon aluminium products with a clearly traceable carbon footprint, meeting the industry's green and low-carbon development needs. There is a vast market demand for green and low-carbon products in China's sustainable development. We hope that all industry players will promote green power aluminium and foster its widespread application."
As is known, more than 90 per cent of RUSAL's electricity comes from renewable sources - from the hydroelectric power stations of Siberian rivers. Therefore, the carbon footprint in the production of ALLOW aluminium is less than 4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of aluminium produced, effectively reducing carbon emissions in all areas. This is the lowest figure in the world. These data will allow end consumers to better assess the carbon footprint of their products at each stage of the production chain and throughout the product's life cycle, increasing customers' contributions to achieving global climate goals.
RUSAL aligns its goals with China's vision for a greener and more sustainable aluminium industry and is ready to integrate deeper into the China aluminium supply chain. It will work hand in hand with local partners and stakeholders to drive innovation and foster sustainable practices throughout the value chain. RUSAL is planning to certify more metals with Green Power Aluminium certifications.
