The Managing Director of Alutrade, Malcolm George, has stepped down after almost four decades at the helm of the family-run, Midlands-based aluminium recycling company.

Chris George set up the business back in 1987, with Malcolm, his brother, joining shortly afterwards. Over the last 38 years, the company has grown to become the largest and most established independent aluminium recycling specialist in the UK.
More than 30,000 tonnes of aluminium are recycled every year at its site in Oldbury. Alutrade is widely recognised as being an industry pioneer and was the first company in the world to install TOMRA’s most advanced X-TRACT™ x-ray metals sorting machine. Ongoing equipment investment, coupled with the company’s continuous refinement of its zero-to-landfill-focused processes, has seen it go from strength to strength, as well as help its customers significantly improve their carbon footprint, which includes improving their scrap recycling rates by 100%.
‘Life’s work’
Malcolm explains: “This is the right time for me to take a step back from day-to-day operations and focus more on my family. However, I will remain in close contact with everyone. Alutrade has been my life’s work, and I will always want the very best for the company.
“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has supported Alutrade over the last 38 years - from our metal suppliers and end-user remelts to all past and present employees, who have worked tirelessly to make Alutrade the first choice for aluminium and metal solutions.

“I look forward to seeing the exciting plans and opportunities that lie ahead. The company is in an extremely strong position, and I can’t wait to watch how the next 38 years unfold.”
Keeping it in the family
A family-run business through and through, Alutrade is now in the capable hands of Malcolm’s nephew, Mike George, who has worked for the company for 20 years and Kevin Pugh, Production Director for the last seven years.
Alutrade’s wider senior leadership team comprises Malcolm’s nephew, Edward George, who has been the Commercial Manager for the last eight years, Lindsey Johnson-Smith who has been the Finance Manager for the last five years, and John Thompson, who has been the Health and Safety Manager for the last seven years.
“Both Kevin and I are excited about the opportunity to lead Alutrade going forward, with a strong focus on collaborative success and a desire to drive growth and innovation while upholding Alutrade’s industry-leading values and reputation,” says Mike.
