The commercial aluminium and glass contractor Zephyr Aluminium LLC is moving from Lancaster city to East Hempfield Township next month, after purchasing a former printing plant there for US$2.95 million, courthouse record shows. Acquired from Pemcor, the new property at 2100 State Road has 54,000 square, which is more than double the size of the company’s current headquarters.
“Zephyr has been limping along with the space we have because that’s what we have,” said President Doug Cornell. According to him, now the company in a bigger space can become more productive.
Cornell said the Second Street building is so small that Zephyr has to reposition machinery to make room for different steps in its production process, a time-consuming handicap. It also needs to store materials outside.
However, the new property will solve all the inconveniences and would also be able to accommodate some of the fabricating work for its Baltimore branch, which is otherwise now being outsourced.
“It seems like that building (on State Road) was made for us,” said Cornell.
Zephyr was found in 1953 by the late S. William Good to make aluminium residential storm windows, storm doors, and window screens. Three years later, it added commercial work and moved to a new property at Second Street in 1971. In 2005, the company was bought by its three employees Cornell, Ed Bradley, and Matt Hanifee. Today the company has 86 employees and annual sales above US$30 million.
