
According to the International Aluminium Institute, world primary aluminium production in May 2022 reported an increase of 3.64 per cent month-on-month to 5.805 million tonnes. In April, the output was at 5.601 million tonnes, down by 2.69 per cent from 5.756 million tonnes a month ago.

On a year-on-year basis, world primary aluminium production in May 2022 registered a slight growth of 0.43 per cent from 5.780 million tonnes.
In the first five months of the year, world primary aluminium production amounted to 27.972 million tonnes, down by 0.69 per cent from 28.165 million tonnes during the same period last year.
China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of aluminium, churned out 3.420 million tonnes of primary aluminium in May, compared to 3.292 million tonnes in April. That was a month-on-month increase of 3.89 per cent, found the International Aluminium Institute. Over the year, the production grew by 1.94 per cent from 3.355 million tonnes. During January-May, China’s production of primary aluminium came in at 16.302 million tonnes, a drop of 0.52 per cent from 16.387 million tonnes.
In Gulf countries, primary aluminium production in May 2022 stood at 515,000 tonnes, registering a growth of 15,000 tonnes from 500,000 tonnes in April. On a year-on-year basis, primary aluminium output in GCC countries flaunted an increase of 3.62 per cent from 497,000 tonnes. In the first five months of 2022, output totalled 2.510 million tonnes.
IAI also showed a monthly increase of 10,000 tonnes in Asia (ex-China) during May 2022 from 377,000 tonnes to 387,000 tonnes. On a yearly basis, the output grew by 2.11 per cent from 379,000 tonnes. Total production during January-May amounted to 1.901 million tonnes after climbing by 3.43 per cent over the year.
