
World primary aluminium production in August 2023 witnessed a marginal rise of 0.23 per cent month-on-month to reach 6.044 million tonnes, found the International Aluminium Institute survey. In July 2023, the output was recorded at 6.03 million tonnes, up by 5 per cent from 5.743 million tonnes in June. Going by the IAI data, world primary aluminium production grew in the past two months after a fall in June by 3.02 per cent from 5.922 million tonnes in May 2023.

On a year-on-year basis, world primary aluminium production in August 2023 increased by 1.58 per cent from 5.950 million tonnes.
World’s total production of primary aluminium in the first eight months of 2023 amounted to 46.538 million tonnes, up by 1.66 per cent from 45.780 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
In China, primary aluminium production during August 2023 was 3.6 million tonnes, reflecting a slight month-on-month rise of 0.33 per cent from 3.588 million tonnes and a year-on-year increase of 2.24 per cent from 3.521 million tonnes. China, the world’s biggest primary aluminium producer, accounted for 59.6 per cent of the world’s primary aluminium production in August 2023.
During January-August 2023, China’s primary aluminium output totalled 27.404 million tonnes, registering a 2.50 per cent rise from 26.735 million tonnes.
In the Gulf Cooperation Council, primary aluminium production reached 517,000 tonnes during August 2023, experiencing a fall of 2,000 tonnes from 519,000 tonnes a month ago but a rise of 3,000 tonnes from 514,000 tonnes a year earlier. In the first eight months, the output in the Gulf was 4.073 million tonnes – 0.79 per cent less than 4.041 million tonnes during the same period last year.
The world’s daily average primary aluminium production in August 2023 was 195,000 tonnes, slightly up by 500 tonnes from 194,500 tonnes in July.
