As aluminium enters markets that had earlier been dominated by traditional metals, especially steel, competition and comparisons on energy consumption have caught the eyes of end-use sectors across the world. In 2019, to produce one tonne of aluminium, the average total energy (AC) intensity across the world stood at about 14.2 MWh, while the average process energy intensity stood at 13.4 MWh. Globally, the aluminium industry emits around 450 MT per annum of CO2 equivalents, accounting for about 1% of the world’s total emission. At this juncture, it becomes an absolute imperative to address the issue of high energy-intensive process of aluminium smelting.

AlCircle, being always at the forefront of the aluminium industry information circle, has therefore, presented a new Sector Focus Report - “Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting and Changing Technologies Towards Gas Emission.”
This report attempts to offer a study that analyses the trends in energy consumption by the primary aluminium sector and various technological developments and initiatives by industry stakeholders with respect to optimising power consumption as well as reducing greenhouse emissions. The report also includes the sources of power supply to aluminium smelters and developments in the usage of clean energy in primary metal production.
Study shows the primary aluminium usage is no way taking a back seat in the years to come. Robust demand for the metal from the end-user sectors, especially the transportation sector, is likely to act as a catalyst for primary metal producers to invest further in sustainable ways of producing the metal. Technological developments, coupled with energy efficiency improvements across the overall supply chain of the metal and investments in renewable energy sources, are expected to play a key role in shaping the future of the aluminium industry.
