Budweiser Brewing Co APAC Ltd, the largest beer company in the Asia-Pacific in respect to sales revenue, has reportedly launched a 'Can-to-Can' recycling programme in China to boost the activity of aluminium cans recycling. The objective is to increase the use of recycled aluminium in cans to reach the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 35 per cent by 2025.

Budweiser APAC initiated the recycling programme last week at its brewery in Putian, East China's Fujian Province. Jan Clysner, vice president for sustainability and procurement at Budweiser, said the company would augment its recycling efforts and support China to attain dual carbon goals and net-zero targets by 2040.

"By focusing on aluminum cans recycling and a closed-loop system, we are setting the stage for more sustainable practices within the beverage industry," said Clysner, adding that this move reflects the company's unwavering commitment to sustainability and greener future.

To date, Budweiser APAC has recycled and reused 6,000 tonnes of aluminium. The Hong Kong Stock-Exchange-listed brewer started aluminium scrap recycling collaboration in 2020 and 2021 with Chinese can supplier ORG Technology Co Ltd and aluminium sheet supplier Shandong Nanshan Aluminum Co Ltd. In 2022, the brewer extended its partnerships with more Chinese companies to promote closed-loop recycling.

Clysner said that Budweiser APAC realises that there's still a long way to go to establish a closed-loop can-to-can recycling system in both China and the Asia-Pacific and thus intends to broaden its collaborations, communications, and awareness programmes.

Clysner further explained that the company would welcome more partnerships and collaborations in the years ahead to boost its recycling practices and achieve 2025 sustainability goals.
