At least nine people are feared dead and between 30 to 40 others have been reported injured following a boiler explosion at a power plant operated by Vedanta Limited in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on Tuesday.
{alcircleadd}The incident occurred around 2 pm at the plant located in Singhitarai village, where a blast is believed to have originated in a boiler tube unit. Police officials said several workers may still be trapped inside, prompting an ongoing rescue operation.
Emergency teams, including local administration and police, rushed to the site soon after the explosion. Authorities have instructed that boiler operations be halted to allow the system to cool, enabling safer access for rescue personnel.
In a statement, the Vedanta power plant spokesperson said, “An unfortunate incident occurred at one of the boiler units at our Singhi Tarai plant on the afternoon of April 14, 2026, involving personnel from our sub-contractor, NGSL, which operates and maintains the unit.”
“Our immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical assistance and treatment for all those affected. We are extending full support to the injured and are closely coordinating with medical teams and local authorities,” the spokesperson added, sharing, “We are in the process of ascertaining details, and a thorough investigation has been initiated in coordination with our partner and relevant authorities. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families of those affected during this difficult time. We request your understanding and time as we gather verified information.”
The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. Officials said efforts are underway to account for all workers present at the time of the blast.
The exact cause of the blast remains unclear.
