In an initiative to curtail its carbon footprint, Vedanta Aluminium — a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, has constructed a 13.4 km long new railway line, which will ensure wholesome raw materials and derivatives transportation by rail.
India’s leading aluminium production company, Vedanta Aluminium, has secured a further boost to its logistical infrastructure and has successfully put in place a new railway line, backing its supply chain breadth. The railway infrastructure expansion is strategised to couple with the commissioning of its 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi district, Odisha, ensuring production and transportation go hand-in-hand.
The railway expansion commissioning will secure hassle-free inbound and outbound movement of raw materials and commodities. Additionally, this is in line with the company’s target of achieving Net Zero Carbon by latest 2050, as the new railway line will reduce carbon emissions by 262 tonnes of carbon dioxide (tCO2) in a year.
The newly inaugurated 13.4 km railway line marks a prominent juncture in Vedanta Lanjigarh’s journey towards 100 per cent rail co-efficient logistics functionality, which includes all goods conveyance only through rail. Furthermore, six new loop lines have been introduced within the in-plant yard, which is supported by an upgraded electronic signalling system. This development enhances the plant’s capacity to handle up to 25 million tonnes of raw materials and commodities annually, accommodating 20 rakes daily with improved transport competence.
An exceptional refinement of this project is the shift of signalling systems from manual to digital by hauling on from Relay Room Interlocking (RRI) to Electronic Interlocking (EI), denoting improved digitisation in rail functions.
Speaking on the latest achievement, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “The commissioning of a 13.4 km railway line at Vedanta Lanjigarh is a transformative step will streamline logistics, reduce turnaround time, and support our long-term production goals, while also reinforcing our commitment to digital innovation and safe operations.”
By integrating state-of-the-art railway infrastructure with advanced digital operations, Vedanta Aluminium continues to set new benchmarks in the aluminium industry. This expansion enhances supply chain efficiency and reinforces the company’s contribution towards India’s industrial growth and development.
Vedanta Aluminium manufactures over half of India’s cumulative aluminium yield, i.e., 2.37 million tonnes (according to FY24 data). The enterprise also leads in value-added aluminium products that find critical applications in core industries.
