During the celebration of Utkal Dibas on Wednesday, India’s top aluminium provider, Vedanta Aluminium, reaffirmed its long-term dedication to Odisha. The commitment has been shown by the firm in its ambitious plan, with an investment of INR 1.8 lakh crore (USD 21.7 billion) on the horizon and over INR 1 lakh crore (USD 12.0 billion) already put to work. The firm has also highlighted its efforts in creating more than 5 lakh job opportunities to date.
{alcircleadd}The firm operates in Odisha and its production includes aluminium, power generation, iron ore extraction, and other related businesses. Within the state, the firm has been boosting a fully integrated, top-notch aluminium operation, an end-to-end value chain starting from Bauxite to finished goods. As the next step, the firm is now advancing with an investment of INR 1.8 lakh crore (USD 21.7 billion) towards a greenfield project located in Odisha’s Dhenkanal and Rayagada districts. The project aims to create a fully integrated aluminium manufacturing ecosystem, which shall include a 3 MTPA aluminium smelter, a 4,900 MW power plant, a 6 MTPA alumina refinery and a top-tier downstream Aluminium Park.
The project is designed to ensure that the industry has a smooth integration from the upstream to the downstream processes. Upon achieving this project, in the initial phase, it is said to create nearly 50 thousand jobs and more than 2 lakh in the long run. This is possible by fostering a strong ancillary ecosystem and establishing Odisha as a competitive player in the global aluminium market.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, stated, “Aluminium is a critical metal for India’s future, with demand projected to rise nearly sixfold by FY2047. Odisha, with the country’s largest bauxite reserves, is naturally poised to anchor this growth. Our upcoming investments are transformative in strengthening India’s aluminium self-reliance, creating large-scale employment, energising local enterprises, and building a future-ready industrial ecosystem. We appreciate the proactive support of the Government of Odisha, and on Utkal Divas, reaffirm our commitment to making Odisha the aluminium capital of the world.”
