The U.S. is one of the leading consumers of aluminium cans in the world. Due to the growing recognition of the aluminium can as one of the most recycled aluminium products in the world and as one of the most sustainable packaging solution, the use of aluminium cans is growing around the world, especially in developed countries. Aluminium soda cans and beer cans have a large sales volume in Canada and the U.S. The world's beer and soda consumption uses about 200 billion aluminium cans every year.

{alcircleadd}The U.S. imported 19,849 tonnes of aluminium cans in 2016 with an estimated import cost of US$ 151 million. The import volume jumped up to 20,288 tons in 2017 with a cost of about US$ 155 million. This records a growth of about 2.2 per cent YOY indicating a rise in can consumption. Increased can packaging for craft beer can be a reason of increased can demand in USA. A microbrewery can make considerable profits only by packaging its beer in cans and selling it for outside consumption.
During 2018, the U.S. is estimated to import about 23,122 tonnes of aluminium cans (actual data for first nine months and an estimate for the last three months). The import cost is estimated to be about US$ 175 million
North America accounted for a maximum share of the global can market owing to high consumption of aluminium cans in the U.S. Growing concerns regarding the use and consumption of sustainable packaging materials is expected to drive the demand for market growth.
Ball is the largest recyclable aluminium beverage can maker in North America. After Ball Corporation acquired Rexam PLC in June 2016, the company became the largest manufacturer of beverage cans in the world. The company suffices the largest portion of the country’s can demand. The country also imports cans to feed the growing demand. The largest exporter of aluminium cans to the U.S. is its neighbouring country Canada, which exported 9908 tonnes of aluminium cans to the U.S in 2017 in comparison to 9990 tonnes in 2016. In 2018, Canada is estimated to export 10537 tonnes of aluminium cans to the USA. The tariffs on aluminium import and the resulted retaliatory tariffs might have a bearing on the trading of aluminium cans too in the coming year, if no solution is reached between Canada and the U.S. regarding the tariffs.
