US primary aluminium production declines by only 1% M-o-M to 74,000 tonnes in Nov’20; Secondary recovery stands 5% down

The United States domestic primary aluminium production stood at 74,000 tonnes in November 2020, registering a drop of 1,000 tonnes or 1.33 per cent from 75,000 tonnes in October, found the US Geological Survey. The average daily production in the same month was 2,450 tonnes, slightly less than in October 2020, 18 per cent less than in November 2019, and 16 per cent less than in November 2018, as shown in the table below.

Total aluminium recovered from scrap in November 2020 amounted to 264,000 tonnes, 5 per cent less than in October 2020 and in November 2019. Of this, 141,000 tonnes of aluminium was recovered from new scrap and 122,000 tonnes from old scrap.

In November 2020, the United States average spot market price of primary aluminium ingot was $1.01 per pound, up 7 per cent moth-on-month and 5 per cent on year. The average cash price in November 2020 of primary aluminium ingot on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was $0.876 per pound, 7 per cent more than in October 2020 and 9 per cent than in November 2019.

Primary aluminium inventories in LME-approved warehouses in the United States, including off-warrant stocks, stood at 210,981 tonnes at the end of November last year, down by 0.83 per cent from 212,748 tonnes at the end of October 2020. Secondary aluminium (North American Secondary Aluminum Alloy Contract) inventories, including off-warrant, also recorded a month-on-month downfall from 30,043 tonnes in October to 27,742 tonnes in November.
