As per the report, top trade officials from Washington and London said they are committed to working towards an expeditious outcome resulting from an excess global capacity of primary aluminium, primarily due to China.

The US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo met Britain’s International Trade Secretary Anne Marie Trevelyan virtually and pledged to find effective solutions.

The tariffs imposed on Britain caused friction with the United States, which, in turn, retaliated with punitive duties on American goods.

According to the report, the officials “discussed the impact on their industries stemming from global excess capacity driven largely by China. The distortions that result from this excess capacity pose a serious threat to market-oriented steel and aluminium industries in the US and the United Kingdom (UK), and to the workers in those industries.”

In June 2018, the former US President Donald Trump had first imposed 10 per cent tariff on aluminium and 25 per cent on steel, citing excessive dumping of the metals caused adverse effects on domestic producers.
