UAE’S petcoke import may accelerate 17% in H2 2018; China’s export to UAE to rise

The UAE, one of the top importers of petcoke, is set to witness a rise in its total petcoke import in 2018. The country’s petcoke imports will grow 22 per cent on a yearly basis to reach 781,948 tonnes in 2018. In 2017, petcoke import totalled 638992 tonnes, down 13 per cent from the previous year, according to recent estimates.

Petcoke or petroleum coke, a by-product of the oil refining process, is a significant fuel for the power generation and aluminium smelting industries. Calcined petcoke, which is obtained by further heat-treating petroleum coke, is used to manufacture anode used in the electrolysis reduction process of aluminium smelting.The aluminium production process requires around half a tonne of carbon for every tonne of metal produced.

According to global import-export data, the UAE imported 418356 tonnes of petcoke in the first half of 2018, up 27 per cent from 329036 tonnes in the first half of 2017. The country’s import of petcoke is estimated to stand at 363592 tonnes in the second half of 2018, up 17 per cent from 309955 tonnes in the second half of 2017.

The total cost for petcoke import from the global market stood at USD 51.9 million in the first half of 2018, up from USD 19.6 million in the first of 2017. The cost of import for petcoke is estimated to stand at USD 21.2 million in the second half of 2018, up from USD 15.8 million in the second half of 2017.

China, one of the dominant suppliers of anode coke to the world’s smelter, exported about 417161 tonnes in 2017. China’s export to the UAE is set to rise 12 per cent year on year in 2018. Emirates Global Aluminium, the biggest aluminium conglomerate in the UAE, buys a substantial volume of its CPC requirement from China. In 2017, the UAE imported petcoke from Brazil (95380 tonnes), Bahrain (53688 tonnes), India (45711 tonnes) and the USA (25922 tonnes).
