According to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 370,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap during August 2017, down 1.3% from the August 2016 total of 375,000 million. USGS estimates that recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totaled 337,500 tonnes, slightly more than the amount in July 2017, slightly less than that in August 2016. But the amount was 7% more than in August 2015.

Out of the total scrap recovery in August 2017, 173,000 tonnes of aluminium was recovered from new scrap, slightly more than the amount in July 2017 and August 2016. Recovery from old scrap was 134,000 tonnes, slightly more than the amount in July 2017 and 3% less than the amount in August 2016.
Through the first eight months of 2017, preliminary data indicate that recovery of aluminium from scrap stood at an estimated 2.6 million tonnes, up 2.1% over the same period of 2016. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government’s consumption statistics showed substantial increase YoY to stand at 1.1 million tonnes through August, registering a 12.8% increase over 2016.
