Turkey’s aluminium semi-finished products export is forecast to see a growth in 2018

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Aluminium manufacturing market in Turkey is growing at a moderately steady pace. A recent market research report by Technavio suggests the market will grow at a CAGR of about 4 per cent until 2020. The demand for aluminium in the domestic building and construction sector is seen as a major growth driver for this market. Aluminium extrusion and flat-rolled aluminium product manufacturers would produce over 900,000 tonnes of products in a year to supply to the global companies operating in construction, automotive, and packaging sectors. On this note, it is to be mentioned that aluminium bar rods and profiles, and aluminium plates sheets and strips exports from Turkey are likely to see a year-on-year growth.

The below chart shows that in 2017, Turkey had exported an estimated amount of 161,862 tonnes of aluminium bar rods and profiles and 188,868 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and strips. In 2018, the export volume of both is expected to increase to 179,034 and 192,269, respectively.

Besides volume, Turkey's export revenue is forecast to grow as well, to US$ 1007 million from aluminium bar rods and profiles and US$ 919 from aluminium plates, sheets and strips, compared to US$552 million and US$436 million from two respective aluminium semi-finished products in 2017.

The estimated volume of aluminium semi-finished products (aluminium bar rods and profiles & aluminium plates sheets and strips) exports from Turkey to the United States had stood at 4987 tonnes in 2017, which is predicted to grow to 14793 tonnes this year.

But on August 11, 2018, US President confirmed double tariffs on aluminium import from Turkey, which means, the latter would be paying 20% export duty on aluminium products instead of 10% to the United States. This may affect Turkey’s aluminium semi-finished products export to the US in the second half of the year.
