Turkey's export of plates, sheets, and strips remain flat YoY; exports to the US expected to drop due to tariffs

Turkey's Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci recently said U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on imported steel and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium is not acceptable to Turkey.

Turkey mostly exports aluminium rolled products globally. Assan Alüminyum is Tukey’s leading manufacturer in the flat rolled aluminium sector, producing flat rolled products (coil, sheet and foil) since its establishment in 1988. Assan Alüminyum accounts for more than half of the flat rolled aluminium production in Turkey and exports to more than 70 countries around the world.

Here, we are trying to analyse the export trends of aluminium plates, sheets, and strips in Turkey to understand if there is any major upturn or downturn in the export market. We would also try to list out the major importers from Turkey for a micro level understanding.

In 2016, Turkey is exported 198,382 tons of aluminium plates, sheets, and strips globally. The total value estimate for aluminium export was USD 5.9 billion. The amount increased to 204,576 tons in 2018. For the first ten months of 2018, Turkey is estimated to export 196,078 million tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets, and strips globally. As for USA is concerned, Turkey exported just 3174 tonnes and 3852 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets, and strips in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, Turkey is expected to export 6072 tonnes of plates, sheets, and strips to USA in 2018.

Turkey exports a minor volume of its total export to the U.S. The country mostly exports to the European countries. This indicates Turkey's aluminium product export is not going to be affected by US import tariffs to a significant extent.
