London-headquartered mining company and aluminium producer Rio Tinto has appointed its new Chief Legal Officer, Governance and Corporate Affairs, Trudi Charles. She is to assume the role on August 1, 2026, succeeding Isabelle Deschamps in this position.

With an experience portfolio covering more than 20 years, Charles has undertaken various senior legal roles at BP across its segments of downstream and supply, trading and shipping businesses. At present, she is the Deputy General Counsel and Senior Vice President Legal, Supply, Trading and Shipping at BP plc.
Prior to this role, for almost eight years, she was an employee at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer across its London and Hong Kong offices. She is qualified to practise through the Law Society of England and Wales, the Law Society of Hong Kong, and the Queensland Law Society.
Regarding the appointment of Trudi Charles, Simon Trott, the Chief Executive Officer of Rio Tinto, stated, “Trudi brings deep legal experience and strong commercial insight. I look forward to having her join the executive team and lead our legal, governance and corporate affairs teams.”
