Ghana, with its vast bauxite reserves, is on the brink of a transformative journey. The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has been established to create an Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI), ready to harness the anticipated growth in the global aluminium sector.
GIADEC, in a strong alliance with strategic partners, is committed to developing every aspect of the IAI value chain. This bold initiative requires robust infrastructure to meet increasing demand and seize emerging opportunities. A modern and efficient transportation network, including railways and ports, is crucial for the aluminium industry's global competitiveness.
The Transport Working Group has been formed to align infrastructure development with GIADEC's strategic plans. This group includes representatives from key government agencies such as the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Departments of Urban Roads, Feeder Roads, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Railway Development Authority. Their mandate is to synchronise infrastructure projects with GIADEC's timelines, facilitating seamless development and operational efficiency.
These entities' collaborative efforts underscore a unified approach to harnessing Ghana's bauxite potential. This approach promises significant economic benefits and positions the nation as a leader in the global aluminium market.
Port infrastructure is another critical component necessary for the IAI. In December 2022, a new dry bulk terminal was commissioned at Takoradi Port in the Western Region, marking a significant step in the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority's (GPHA) aggressive strategy to enhance the country's trade capacity.
The newly designed terminal can handle at least 30 million tonnes of bulk cargo annually, a substantial increase from its previous capacity of approximately 6.3 million tonnes annually. The port is equipped with three conveyor belts, collectively capable of handling 30 million tons of bulk cargo annually.
GIADEC has announced that expanding the Takoradi port, including dedicating one of the three mechanised conveyor belt systems exclusively to bauxite, will boost the export capacity for the increased bauxite production under the Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) initiative.
Building on the success at the Takoradi port, GIADEC emphasises the need for similar improvements in the railway sector. A fully functional railway system is essential for the Corporation's infrastructure and for the IAI's success. This necessity arises from transporting large volumes of raw bauxite from existing and new mines to the refineries that will be constructed.
GIADEC recognises the importance of a functional railway system and has been working closely with the Ghana Railway Development Authority. The Corporation, through its active participation in the Transport Working Group, advocates for the extension of the railway line to future mine locations.
The Corporation added that the completion of the western railway lines, for instance, will significantly enhance the development of the IAI.
