In the verdant landscapes of China’s southwest, a grand quest to transform the aluminium industry into a flagbearer of sustainability encounters turbulent waters. Reuters reports on the challenges faced by major players like China Hongqiao Group amidst erratic rainfall, shifting capacities, and the quest for greener pastures.

Torrential rainfall dampens China's green aluminium drive: Challenges amidst sustainable goals

China Hongqiao Group and others embarked on a journey to Yunnan province, enticed by promises of abundant hydropower. However, as rains faltered, so did the reliability of electricity, casting shadows over the envisioned capacity shifts.

Despite aspirations for low-carbon production, the hydro crunch in Yunnan compelled smelters to reduce output, hampering China’s broader energy transition efforts. Plans for new facilities face delays, with operational challenges hindering the realization of green dreams.

“The power cuts in the past two years have made it clear that Yunnan can’t be sustained as a major producing region,” said one Yunnan industry figure, who wanted to remain veiled.

Aluminium’s significant carbon footprint poses a hurdle to China’s ambitious climate targets. The allure of green aluminium, produced with clean energy, beckons, yet supply disruptions threaten to derail progress toward carbon neutrality.

Amidst power supply woes, producers contemplate alternative locations, pointing at a potential shift in the industry dynamics. Northwestern China emerges as a promising destination, offering stability and access to diverse energy sources.

As Yunnan grapples with its hydro woes, the industry seeks solace in the promise of rain and explores avenues for sustainable growth. The journey towards a greener aluminium industry continues, navigating challenges with resilience and determination.

The path to greening China’s aluminium industry encounters obstacles, yet optimism prevails. As stakeholders adapt and innovate, the quest for sustainability marches on, propelled by the collective vision of a brighter, cleaner future.
