Top five aluminium exporters to the U.S. in January-April 2019

The U.S. total imports of aluminium for consumption stood at 1.95 million tonnes in the first four months of 2019, 18 per cent less than 2.38 million tonnes in the first four months of 2018, according to the latest Mineral Industry Survey report from US Geological Survey. Imports of aluminium (crude metals and alloys, plate, sheets, bars, etc., and scrap) came in at 510,000 tonnes in April, representing a drop 9.57 per cent from last year.

Canada continued to be the leading source of imported aluminium materials, supplying 39% of all aluminium imports during the first four months of 2019, followed by the United Arab Emirates (9%), Australia (6%), India (5%), and Russia (4%).

Canada exported 754,000 tonnes of aluminium to U.S. in January-April 2019, from 1 million tonnes exported in January-April 2018. Exports dropped 26 per cent year-on-year. Exports to the U.S. were 211,000 tonnes in April. Exports of crude metals and alloys, semi-finished products, and scrap were 569,000 tonnes, 60,500 tonnes, and 124,000 tonnes in January-April.

UAE stood second with the export of 177,000 tonnes of aluminium in the first four months of 2019. Exports of crude metals and alloys, semi-finished products, and scrap were 176,000 tonnes, 1,690 tonnes, and 15 tonnes in January-April.

Australia comes at a third position with the export of 109,000 tonnes of aluminium. Exports increased 329 per cent from 25,400 tonnes in January- April 2018. Australia’s exports to the U.S. were 24,800 tonnes in April.

India and Russia exported 97,300 tonnes and 76,000 tonnes of aluminium to the U.S. in the first four months of 2019. In April, exports from India and Russia were 28,900 tonnes and 27,800 tonnes.
