
The US dollar slipped to near a two-week low against key rivals on Monday, while the Chinese yuan weakened below 7 versus the greenback, an 11-year low, as the US-China trade war intensified. Most LME base metals closed lower on Monday. LME aluminium lost 0.4% while SHFE aluminium rose 0.4%.
Three-month LME aluminium weakened to a seven-week low of US$1,760 per tonne on Monday before it ended 0.39% lower at US$1,766 per tonne. As Rusal suspended operations at Achinsk alumina refinery after fire nearby, it is likely to provide some cost support to LME aluminium. The contract is likely to trade at US$1,760-1,800 per tonne today.

As on August 5, Monday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1738.50per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1739.50 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1771per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1772 per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1875 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1880 per tonne.
The LME aluminium opening stock dropped yesterday to 1020000 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 756875 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 263125 tonnes.
LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1766 per tonne.
SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend
The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange (SME) dropped to US$ 1975 per tonne today from US$ 1978 per tonne on Monday.
Prices of aluminium also received a boost from rekindled concerns about Indonesia’s export ban on raw ore, as Indonesia is the third-largest supplier of bauxite for China. The most-traded SHFE September contract rebounded from a low of RMB 13,765 per tonne to an intraday high of RMB 13,905 per tonne yesterday, before closing 0.54% higher on the day at RMB 13,880 per tonne. The SHFE contract gained 0.43% to close at RMB 13,885 per tonne overnight. SHFE aluminium is expected to remain rangebound, in view of an array of cross currents. It is likely to move between RMB 13,700-13,900 per tonne today, with spot prices in a discount of RMB 20 per tonne to a premium of RMB 20 per tonne.
