
The US exports of aluminium scrap stood at 165,000 tonnes in August 2019, up 8.55% month-on-month. Exports registered an increase after three straight months of decline. Aluminium scrap exports increased by 3.77% from 159,000 tonnes in June and 1.85% from 162,000 tonnes in May, according to the latest report from the US Geological Survey. The US exported 1.26 million tonnes of aluminium scrap in the first eight months of 2019.

China, Malaysia, and India were the top three aluminium scrap importers from the US in August. The three countries together imported about 76,900 tonnes of scrap from the US.
China imported 26,500 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US in August, a decrease of 15.34% from 31,300 tonnes imported in July. China’s import from the US was down 16.67% from 31,800 tonnes in June and 21.83% from 33,900 tonnes in May. Import volumes have been declining month-on-month. In the first eight months of this year, total imports were 281,000 tonnes.
Malaysia’s imports of aluminium scrap from the US totalled 25,800 tonnes in August, a 30.3% month-on-month increase. Imports were 19,800 tonnes in July. Imports rose by 20.56% from June’s import of 21,400 tonnes and 27.72% from May’s import of 20,200 tonnes. Malaysia imported 145,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap in January-August.
India’s aluminium scrap imports in August increased by 14.95% from July and 12.33% from June and 1.65% from May. Imports amounted to 24,600 tonnes in August 2019. Imports from the US in the first eight months of 2019 stood at 175,000 tonnes.
