Spain is home to Europe's largest machinery scrapyard. Some of the industry's biggest aluminium scrap dealers and recyclers also have their facilities located here in the Iberian Peninsula country. Thus, the country is known for importing a good amount of aluminium scrap from various parts of the world. The two most important countries that supply the maximum amount of scrap to Spain are France and Portugal.
But according to our third party data, Spain’s aluminium scrap import from both France and Portugal is estimated to stand lower in 2018 compared to the previous two years. As the graph below shows, in 2016, Spain had imported 99,152 tonnes of aluminium scrap from France and 35,069 tonnes from Portugal. In the year next, the country’s import from France dropped a bit to 98,978 tonnes but from Portugal, it stood higher at 37,152 tonnes. In 2018, Spain’s aluminium scrap import from France is estimated to drop even further to 93,677 tonnes, down 6 per cent from 2016 and 5.3 per cent from 2017. Breaking the last year’s record, the import from Portugal would also likely stand low in 2018 at 33,159 tonnes, down 5.4 per cent from 2016 and 11 per cent from 2017.
{alcircleadd}Consequently, Spain’s aluminium scrap import cost from France and Portugal in 2018 is estimated to drop as well from the previous year. Compared to US$86 million of import cost from France and US$42 million from Portugal in 2017, Spain’s aluminium scrap import cost in 2018 would approximately peg at US$70 million from France and US$37 million from Portugal. In 2016, the costs from France and Portugal had stood at US$77 million and US$35 million, respectively. This shows that the import cost from France in 2016 was higher than in 2018, but that from Portugal was lower by US$2 million.
As far as Spain’s total aluminium scrap import is concerned, 2018 is estimated to see a drop totalled at 200,696 tonnes, from 205,508 tonnes in 2017. In 2016, on the other hand, the import volume was at 204,750 tonnes. This represents that Spain’s estimated aluminium scrap import in 2018 is lower than both 2016 and 2017. According to the available data, 2019 is likely to see a further decline in Spain’s aluminium scrap import to 180,119 tonnes in total.
