
South Korea, one of the leading aluminium scrap importers in the world, imports aluminium scrap and recycles them for making aluminium alloys. The country’s estimated import volume registered a growth of 42855 tonnes or 6 per cent year-on-year in 2018. South Korea’s automotive sector is a major consumer of aluminium products.

{alcircleadd}South Korea has been importing a major chunk of aluminium scraps from Japan. Japan’s estimated export volume in 2018 was at 86022 tonnes, from 82035 tonnes in 2017.
Our own third party data shows South Korea imported a total of 696258 tonnes of aluminium scrap in 2017 and the volume increased to about 739113 tonnes in 2018. The import values were at US$ 966 million and US$ 1 billion in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

In 2019, South Korea’s total aluminium scrap import is estimated to be about 609748 tonnes and the import from Japan is estimated to be about 68140 tonnes in 2019.
