Basalt Distillery, a forerunner in the gin sector, has announced the release of its unique eco-refills, marking a key milestone in the company's continued dedication to sustainability. These beautiful aluminium bottles, created to go with its distinctive glass bottle inspired by the Giant's Causeway, are meant to be delivered right to the door and used to replenish a glass gin bottle at home.
The distillery's commitment to have a beneficial effect on the environment is evident in this innovative approach. Basalt Distillery's decision to opt for aluminium in these eco-refills was a meticulously thought-out choice. Aluminium, recognized as the most abundant metal on earth, is widely acknowledged as one of the most extensively recycled packaging materials today. With an impressive 76.2 per cent recycling rate for aluminium packaging across Europe, it stands out as one of the most recycled materials.
“At Basalt Distillery we have taken inspiration from the natural wonder of the Giant’s Causeway, which sits on our doorstep, with the very water that goes into our gin being filtered by the same basalt rock which formed the causeway in the first place. We are passionate about preserving the unspoilt nature of our homeland, while also celebrating its magnificence. The introduction of our eco-refills was a conscious decision to make our luxury gin less impactful on nature by reducing waste generation and carbon output. Our refillable bottle preserves every intricate aspect of our award-winning three-dimensional gin, ensuring that each sip is a testament to the artistry of our craft,” said joint founder Martha Garbe.
The sustainability of aluminium is underpinned by its infinite recyclability, forming the cornerstone of its environmental benefits. Moreover, the recycling of aluminium necessitates much less energy than the manufacturing of fresh aluminium, leading to a remarkable decrease of 95 per cent in energy consumption.
Additionally, these aluminium bottles boast a remarkable featherweight design, tipping the scales at approximately 87% less than their glass equivalents. This promotes more fuel-efficient transportation and contributes significantly to minimizing the distillery's carbon footprint. Recycled aluminium, in particular, can exhibit a lower CO2 footprint when contrasted with alternative materials such as glass, plastic, and cardboard.
Basalt Distillery has received many prestigious awards this year. They won a gold medal in the Blas na hÉireann Awards for both the Best White Spirit and Liqueur categories. Additionally, they were awarded two stars in the Great Taste Awards, a silver medal in the International Wine and Spirits Awards, and the title of Best Contemporary Gin at the Gin & Tonic Awards held in Sweden.
