SBTi endorses Trivium Packaging’s climate goals

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Trivium Packaging is all set to celebrate yet another milestone in the company’s climate strategy following a formal approval from the Science Based Targets initiative ( SBTi) for its net-zero emissions target. The validation confirms that Trivium’s long-term plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions align with a 1.5°C global warming pathway and with the wider international aim of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Michael Mapes, Chief Executive of Trivium Packaging, said the endorsement provides reassurance both internally and across the company’s wider network. “SBTi approval gives our teams and partners confidence in our commitment to decarbonisation,” he said.

Mapes added that the company’s focus would remain firmly on practical action. Trivium has plans to strengthen sustainable sourcing, which is most likely to expand its usage of renewable electricity, align products with ecodesign principles, and reduce overall energy consumption while improving operational excellence. He also highlighted a commitment to transparency, stating that progress against these goals will be reported annually.

Under the target approved by SBTi, Trivium Packaging B.V. has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. Using 2020 as a baseline year, the company aims to cut absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90% by mid-century. Over the same period, it has also pledged a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions.

Delivery of the strategy will rely on a set of defined decarbonisation levers, which include responsible material sourcing, reliance on renewable energy, product redesign keeping the environmental impact in mind, and continuous efficiency gains.

Trivium Packaging has already made notable progress. By December 2024, the company had reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 31 per cent compared with 2020 levels, while Scope 3 emissions were down 19 per cent over the same period. It has also maintained its EcoVadis Platinum rating and retained a place on the CDP A List, achievements that the company says reinforce the credibility of its newly approved SBTi pathway.

Together, the approval and progress to date position Trivium as it works towards its long-term goal of net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.
