Rusal-owned Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter reportedly caught fire on Wednesday, October 4. At 8:57 am (0157 GMT), a fire breakout was reported on the territory of the KrAZ (Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter).
The news came after Russia’s TASS state news agency said, citing the officials, “A transformer caught fire on an area of 50 square metres (538 square feet)."
According to the emergency officials, there are no casualties so far. It was immediately not known what caused the fire.
The Krasnoyarsk Smelter can produce 1 million tonnes of aluminium annually, leveraging EcoSoderberg technology. In mid-2020, Rusal retrofitted the smelter with EcoSoderberg technology. That required a modification of the total 1954 reduction cells to be able to use the EcoSoderberg technology, the best-known technology in the aluminium production section by Rosstandard.
Experts say the EcoSoderberg process is one of the most efficient and environmentally-friendly production processes in the aluminium industry.
