Rusal’s aluminium sales increase by 7% amidst production fall in Q2 2020, thanks to Asia’s growing contribution in sales mix

The leading global aluminium producer, Rusal, has released its operating results for the second quarter of 2020. The company reported that its aluminium production in Q2 2020 dropped by 1.4 per cent from the earlier quarter to 927,000 tonnes, Siberian smelters representing 93 per cent of the output.

Rusal’s aluminium sales, on the other hand, increased by 6.8 per cent quarter-on-quarter to 976,000 tonnes in Q2 2020, amid the downfall in production. However, the sales of value-added products declined by 14 per cent Q-o-Q to 363,000 tonnes, demonstrating a decline of VAP share in total sales mix to 37 per cent versus 46 per cent in Q1 2020, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Backed on the diversified client base, Rusal successfully adjusted the regional sales geography in line with the new environment on the markets caused by COVID-19. For instance, Europe’s share in total sales mix dropped by 9 per cent quarter-on-quarter, while Asia’s share grew by 12 per cent to 27 per cent from the previous quarter. But despite the drop in Europe’s contribution, it still dominates the mix with 46 per cent of its share.

However, this shift reflects less severe lockdown measures in Asia and a one-off arbitrage opportunity in China.

In the second quarter of the year, the average aluminium realized price decreased by 11.3 per cent Q-o-Q to US$ 1,654 per tonne, primarily driven by the London Metal Exchange QP component, which was down by 10.7 per cent Q-o-Q to US$ 1526 per tonne, and average realized premium component, which remained down by 17.9 per cent Q-o-Q to US$ 128 per tonne. The decline in premiums during Q2 2020 is attributed to the decrease of VAP share in product sales mix and overall market conditions related to the pandemic.

Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting

Rusal also reported in its results that the world aluminium production grew by 18 per cent to 32.1 million tonnes in H1 2020. In China, the output increased by 2.8 per cent to 18.2 million tonnes, while that in the rest of the world remained almost flat at 13.9 million tonnes.

The global aluminium demand in H1 2020 was down by 6.6 per cent year-on-year to 30.3 million tonnes. Ex-China demand contracted by 15.4 per cent to 12.3 million tonnes, while the demand in China remained almost unchanged and shifted by a mere 0.5 per cent to 18 million tonnes.
