Rolls Royce has secured a contract to supply MTU diesel engines for six new search and rescue (SAR) vessels for the Turkish Coast Guard, the company said on 19 January. The search and rescue (SAR) vessels are made of aluminium. MTU is the core brand of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
The SAR vessels to be constructed by Damen Shipyards and each will be powered by two 8-cylinder MTU Series 2000 engines. The boats will assist rescue migrants along with Turkish coast from the crisis area. The MTU engine will keep operating the vessels even in extreme occasion.
Knut Müller, Head of the Marine and Government Business Division at MTU said: "We have designed our engines specifically for such difficult operational conditions, including the unlikely event of capsizing.”

The aluminium hull design is based on the Damen's Axe-Bow technology and equipped for the operations of lifeboats.
The company is expecting to deliver the first boat in May 2017 and remaining to be delivered by the end of 2017.The European Union is offering financial support for the construction of new SAR vessels.
