During the first ten days of Rock in Rio Brazil 2024, held from September 13 to 22 and attracting over 730,000 attendees, Rede Movimento, in partnership with Novelis and the National Association of Recyclable Material Collectors (Ancat), successfully collected and sent over 8 tonnes of aluminium cans for recycling.

The material will first be processed at Novelis' collection centre in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, before being transported to their factory in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo. The initiative employs blockchain technology to guarantee traceability and transparency throughout the process, enabling data related to energy savings, social impact, raw material extraction, and avoiding carbon emissions to be tracked.
"We work to ensure that the material consumed is recycled and returns to the production chain efficiently, valuing the work of collectors and contributing to the planet's sustainability. This operating model ensures that the raw material continues to be one of the most recycled materials in Brazil, with rates that remain among the highest in the world," said Gustavo Faria, Senior Manager of Metal Business at Novelis South America.
According to data from Ancat and Reutiliza Já, recycling the aluminium collected at the event will prevent the extraction of approximately 40 tonnes of bauxite, a key mineral in primary aluminium production, thereby supporting environmental preservation efforts.
Gustavo Faria, Senior Manager of Metal Business at Novelis South America, highlighted that Novelis' collaboration with Ancat and waste picker cooperatives at major events like Rock in Rio demonstrates the company's strong commitment to the circularity of aluminium cans.
