Budby, who began her career with Rio Tinto more than a decade ago and formally joined the company in 2015, has been a long-standing and valued member of the team. She will now lead over 300 employees at the site.

Reflecting on her journey, Shiona Budby said her goal is to inspire future LAP leaders to embrace their identity, take pride in their heritage, and step forward with confidence to lead with strength and cultural pride.

“Building strong relationships through shared lived experiences is the foundation of productivity and success. To me, being a manager means creating strong foundations that enable people to succeed in their roles,” added Budby.

Since its launch in 2002, the LAP program has supported more than 300 Indigenous participants, creating pathways for careers and leadership opportunities within the resources sector. She described her leadership approach as one built on empathy and collaboration, underpinned by a strong commitment to empowering those around her.

Meanwhile, Rio Tinto has commenced early works and final engineering studies aimed at expanding Amrun’s production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029. The project named Kangwinan at the request of the Wik Waya People, will involve developing a new mine and enlarging the existing port facilities. Once complete, it is expected to nearly double production from Rio Tinto’s Weipa Southern operations, where Amrun is based.

“Shiona’s appointment marks a significant step forward in building a more inclusive and representative future for our operations and our communities. This achievement is not only a testament to Shiona’s leadership, dedication, and deep connection to Country, but also a powerful symbol of progress,” said Rio Tinto general manager of Weipa operations Steve Dunstone.
