According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. A new “single stream” pilot recycling program will take effect Mar. 1 in Green Brook and Mar. 7 in South Bound Brook. These changes are being made in the Somerset County recycling program to increase the amount of material recycled and make it easier for residents to fully participate in the program. Following a landmark decision by the city of Concord, MA to ban the sale of single-serving plastic bottles for drinking water, the Aluminum Association is calling on residents to use infinitely recyclable, sustainable aluminum to get their bottled water fix. Aluminum is by far the most recycled -- and recyclable -- beverage container in the United States, reaching a 65.1 percent recycling rate in 2011.
