According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Anglesey Aluminium decided to close its remaining operations at the smelter. The company announced it would close its re-melt business at the site, with a loss of 60 jobs. The decision came following a meeting of the plant’s Metal Board on Thursday which came to the conclusion that the re-melt facility was no longer economically viable, and they would cease the operation within the next two months. Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has proposed a memorandum for bringing the basic customs duty (BCD) on aluminium scrap at par with the duty on aluminium products in Budget 2013. At present, basic customs duty on aluminium products is at to 5 per cent, while duty for aluminium scrap is nil. FICCI highlighted the fact that most of the aluminium downstream products can be made using both scrap and primary aluminium. Universal Scrap Metals Inc. (USM) is adding a recycling facility in Georgetown, Ky. The Chicago-based USM said in a news release the company’s investment includes purchasing recycling equipment from Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corp. (ABRC). The equipment is used to help prepare used beverage containers for processing at aluminum smelting facilities. For the fourth year in a row, Gershow Recycling opened its Medford facility to local high school robotics teams participating in the School-Business Partnerships of Long Island’s (SBPLI) upcoming Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition to receive free aluminum scrap. Patchogue-Medford was one of 12 Long Island high school robotics teams that took advantage of the program and visited Gershow on January 19. Members of the Patchogue-Medford robotics team will use the aluminum scrap and its kit of parts to help them build a 120-pound robot. US aluminum producer Novelis faced a challenging fiscal third quarter, with net sales down 6% from the year-ago period, but saw improved demand compared with last year and was optimistic about solid global demand moving forward, President and CEO Phil Martens said Tuesday. Nampak, Africa’s largest packaging group, is investing R1.6bn in two businesses that produce bottles and cans for the "growing" beverage market, the firm said on Friday.
