According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Sainsbury’s is boosting its recycling facilities to help shoppers tackle post-Christmas waste. It is offering Christmas card recycling at 500 stores until 15 January, and will make a donation to the Forest Stewardship Council based on the volume of cards collected. US-based Rumpke Consolidated Companies Inc. has been awarded US$ 32 million in funds by the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority so it can establish a new recycling plant in Cincinnati. The 84 000-square-foot recycling plant will replace the Rumpke facility that was damaged in a fire in 2012. It will employ around 110 workers and process residential and commercial materials through a dual infeed system. On an hourly basis, the plant will treat 55 tonnes of residential material and 20 tonnes of commercial. The new facility will incorporate six optical scanners for sorting fibre and containers, two eddy current separators for aluminium, an electromagnet for ferrous scrap and an extensive mixed-glass removal system. Rumpke expects to complete the construction project by October 2013.
Marine Biology and Ecology students from Falmouth Marine School are sending out an appeal for aluminium cans to help raise money for the town's aquarium. They've been collecting them to be recycled for the past few weeks and now need one final push before the weigh in on 8th January. The group have undertaken the task as part of a work experience module which requires them to carry out some fundraising. Green Township residents can recycle cut Christmas trees in the cemetery at the intersection of state Route 165 and Beaver Creek Road beginning today, according to recycling coordinator Janet Schaefer. BMW announced their inclusion into the ASI or Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. The ASI was founded back in September of 2012 as an aluminium value chain initiative. A bunch of smart people got together to create a standard for how aluminium is mined, manufactured and recycled and there hope is that companies that use a lot of the stuff will sign on as partners. Bens Run, a Pleasants County aluminum recycling facility will cease operations next year. Aleris will close its Bens Run recycling facility March 1. Jason Saragian, director of communication for Aleris, said 30-40 employees will be impacted. Employees were notified of the closure Friday. "Despite our best efforts, the facility was not meeting our business goals," Saragian said. "We put a lot of thought into this decision, because it impacts people." Atlanta-based Novelis has begun construction on the world’s largest aluminum recycling and casting centre in Germany. The $250-million facility will be constructed adjacent to the existing Novelis aluminum rolling mill and will produce 400,000 metric tonnes of aluminum sheet ingot from recycled material each year.
