Production cut at refineries in Guangxi lifts China’s alumina spot price to RMB3453/t; A00 aluminium ingot price nosedives by RMB650/t

The average alumina spot price in China has increased by RMB 85 per tonne on Wednesday, September 15, following a restraint on the previous day. According to the Shanghai Metals Market, the hike has brought the alumina price at RMB 3,453 per tonne, marking a week-on-week jump of RMB 292 per tonne.

In Henan and Shanxi, alumina spot price has surged by RMB 100 per tonne to close at RMB 3,500 per tonne, while the price in Shandong has settled at RMB 3,450 per tonne by also gaining RMB 100 per tonne. In Guizhou and Guangxi, alumina price has grown by RMB 50 per tonne to peg at RMB 3,250 per tonne on September 15, found SMM.

The alumina price surge across China could be attributed to lower production, as three refineries in Guangxi have begun to reduce output from September 9 after the environmental protection inspection team arrived. The refineries have cut the capacity by 3 million tonnes per year, accounting for 25.6 per cent of the total existing alumina capacity in the province.

However, despite the rise in alumina spot price, China’s A00 aluminium ingot price has continued to plunge by RMB 650 per tonne to come in at RMB 22,240 per tonne on September 15, learned SMM. The average prices are expected to range between RMB 22,220 per tonne and RMB 22,260 per tonne, with spot contract likely to be traded at a premium price of RMB 0-40 per tonne.

A00 aluminium ingot price nosedives by RMB650/t

Foshan has seen the sharpest fall of RMB 670 per tonne to stand at RMB 22,270 per tonne, followed by the decrease of RMB 665 per tonne to peg at RMB 22,195 per tonne. In Linyi and Shenyang, A00 aluminium ingot price has nosedived by RMB 650 per tonne and RMB 640 per tonne, respectively, to close at RMB 22,240 per tonne and RMB 22,230 per tonne.

Aluminium alloys prices have also decreased across China, bringing the aluminium alloy (A356) price down by RMB 250 per tonne to RMB 23,750 per tonne. Aluminium alloys (ADC12) price and aluminium alloy (A380) price have dwindled by RMB 200 per tonne to stand at RMB 23,100 per tonne and RMB 24,300 per tonne, respectively.
