Mexico-US trade talks, including discussions on aluminum tariffs , have been delayed, with the fourth round of negotiations now expected to take place in October. The delay comes as both countries manage busy diplomatic schedules. Luis Rosendo Gutierrez, Mexico’s deputy economy minister for foreign trade, said the delay stemmed from scheduling conflicts, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States and the upcoming G20 summit. Although the formal talks have been postponed, technical discussions between Mexico and the US Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) are continuing on a “daily” basis, Gutierrez said. President and CEO Hilde Merete Aasheim said, “It is encouraging to see costs coming down in our upstream business, combined with forceful restructuring and optimization measures downstream. Amid challenging markets, it is more important than ever to focus our efforts on what we control ourselves. I am therefore pleased to report progress on our new and ambitious improvement programs, which is an important enabler for our profitability and sustainability agenda.” Underlying EBIT for Primary Metal...

NALCO may have to close one more unit after shutting down three units of its Captive Power Plant, each of 120 megawatt capacity due to shortage of coal supply. This is likely to impact its aluminium smelting operations seriously. Nalco is currently drawing around 190 MW of power from the state grid at a higher rate because of the shortage at CPP. “Short supply of coal has severely impacted aluminium production of NALCO and also the cost of power, as the power purchased from the grid is costly as compared to the power produced by NALCO at its CPP,” the state-run unit said in a statement. Nalco’s CPP at Angul and steam and power plant at Damanjodi are depended on Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, a Coal India Ltd arm for coal supply. Nalco has already stopped 80 electrolytic pots in the smelter...
