Low-carbon aluminium vs copper: Who is really paying the green premium?

The transition towards lower-carbon manufacturing is changing how companies evaluate aluminium and copper. Beyond availability and technical performance, buyers are increasingly examining the emissions embedded in the metals they purchase and whether reducing that footprint justifies a higher price. While low-carbon aluminium has developed into an established premium market, low-carbon copper remains at a developing stage, raising the loaded question: How much are buyers willing to pay for lower-carbon metal? Explore the production, demand and consumption forecasts of bauxite and alumina in our report: “ Global Bauxite & Alumina Market Forecast to 2036: Supply–Demand, Trade Flows & Price Outlook ” Why aluminium is further ahead Aluminium has had more time to establish a market for...

Mexico prioritizes aluminum tariff cuts as US trade talks shift to October

Mexico-US trade talks, including discussions on aluminum tariffs , have been delayed, with the fourth round of negotiations now expected to take place in October. The delay comes as both countries manage busy diplomatic schedules. Luis Rosendo Gutierrez, Mexico’s deputy economy minister for foreign trade, said the delay stemmed from scheduling conflicts, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States and the upcoming G20 summit. Although the formal talks have been postponed, technical discussions between Mexico and the US Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) are continuing on a “daily” basis, Gutierrez said. Explore the production, demand and consumption forecasts of bauxite and alumina in our report: " Global Bauxite & Alumina Market Forecast to 2036:...

Alcoa sees global aluminium deficit of 800 thousand to 1.2 million tonnes in 2019

Alcoa continued to project a global aluminium deficit ranging between 800 thousand and 1.2 million tonnes in comparison to 1.0 million and 1.4 million tonnes projected in Q2 2019. The company lowered its global aluminium demand growth projection for 2019 to a range of -0.6 percent to 0.4 percent from a previous quarter’s estimate between 1.25 percent and 2.25 percent. “The change is driven by weakening macroeconomic conditions, trade tensions between the US and China, and contracting manufacturing activity, especially in the global automotive sector,” Alcoa said on Wednesday, 16 October 2019. Alcoa projected a global surplus market for alumina in 2019, ranging between 1 million and 1.8 million tonnes, up from last quarter’s estimate of 500 thousand tonnes to 1.3 million tonnes, driven by...

Weaker dollar gave support to LME aluminium yesterday, SHFE aluminium traded rangebound

The US dollar weakened for a second straight day to month lows against a basket of its rivals on Wednesday after bleak US retail sales data painted a gloomy picture of the economy and supported the case for further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. LME base metals closed lower on Wednesday and aluminium dipped 0.1%. SHFE aluminium inched up 0.1%. Three-month LME aluminium recovered from earlier losses to end 0.12% weaker at US$1,727.5 per tonne on Thursday. Traders aggressively covered long positions on Wednesday, as they see limited upward momentum in LME aluminium with high inventories across LME-approved warehouses. A weaker US dollar might provide some support to base metals today. LME aluminium is expected to trade between US$1,710-1,740 per tonne. As on October 16,...

China Hongqiao Group is planning to set up a “green aluminium” industrial park in Southwest China’s Yunnan capitalizing on the hydropower resources of the province, a statement from affiliate firm Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering says. A number of Chinese aluminium producers, including Aluminum Corp of China, or Chinalco, and Henan Shenhuo, have been focusing on Yunnan, because of the easy access to cleaner hydropower for the energy-intensive smelting process. Hongqiao Chairman Zhang Bo attended a signing ceremony with Yunnan government officials in Kunming on Tuesday. According to the statement, government will work together with Hongqiao to set up the park, according to the company statement. In China, Hongqiao is also known as Weiqiao. Vedanta raises prices of aluminium ingots after 5 cuts in a row

Vedanta Ltd has raised the prices of aluminium ingots after cutting them five times in a row, trade sources told Cogencis. The natural resources major raised the prices of these products by nearly 2% with effect from Thursday, for the first time since early September. The hike in prices is in line with the improvement in prices of aluminium on the London Metal Exchange, which had been under pressure because of the trade talks between US and China failing to come to a resolution. So far in October, the three-month futures of aluminium are up over 1% on the LME, against a fall in prices in September and August. Companies generally link the prices of their aluminium products to the three-month futures of the metal on the LME. The aluminium vertical contributed around a third to the company's...
