US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

China’s aluminium production dips for the fifth month in row to 3.155 million tonnes in September 2021: NBS

According to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, China, the world’s top producer of aluminium, churned out 3.08 million tonnes of primary aluminium. That was down by 2.4 per cent from 3.155 million tonnes a month ago and 2.1 per cent year-on-year, marking the fifth consecutive month of downfall caused by ongoing electricity shortages. Several Chinese regions imposed restrictions on power usage this year for energy-intensive industries, including aluminium, to ease tight electricity supply and meet energy consumption targets. The output in September was at its lowest monthly level since June 2020, showed NBS. On a daily basis, the production in September was at 102,667 tonnes per day, which was, however, an increase of 0.88 per cent from 101,770 tonnes a month ago. BMO...

Curbs on domestic aluminium production due to tight electricity supply in China increased the demand for overseas metal, resulting in a rise in imports. However, on a year-on-year calculation, the imports in September were down by 28.9 per cent, showed the data. China imported record volumes of aluminium in 2020 because of the rapid recovery in Chinese demand after the coronavirus outbreak opened up the arbitrage window for cheaper metal to flow in from overseas. But due to the recovery in domestic demand after the COVID-19 pandemic in comparison with production, China had to import a considerable amount of aluminium last year. Andryushin also noted that Rusal’s total production of aluminium would increase to around 4.3 million tonnes in 2022 due to the...
