US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

FIFA World Cup 2034 to drive Saudi aluminium demand, set to surge 80% by 2030

Saudi Arabia’s aluminium consumption could climb to as much as 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, as the Kingdom ramps up infrastructure and industrial development ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

Yunnan in China removes preferential electricity pricing for aluminium producers to control power consumption

Southwest China’s Yunnan province, one of the country’s largest aluminium-producing areas, has reportedly removed preferential electricity pricing for electrolytic aluminium producers to control power consumption amid shortages. The news came after the provincial government issued a policy on Monday prescribing an immediate cancellation of power price discounts and subsidies to the aluminium industry. This will result in an increase in electricity costs, estimates Shi Fuliang, co-founder of aluminium industry research firm ALD. Shi Fuliang said the province would adopt a tiered electricity pricing system. Yunnan used to offer preferential electricity pricing to aluminium companies at 16 per cent to 22 per cent lower than the industry average. The cost of electricity accounts for 40 per...

Aluminium prices to stay high until next year, owing to high energy cost: Global Analysts

Price of aluminium will stay high until next year, since smelters have been compelled to cut production due to increased energy costs. On Monday, Global analysts stated that, the total price of aluminium in 2021 is expected to stand at US$2,450 per tonne and US$2,300 per tonne in 2022, up from US$2,300 per tonne and US$2,100 per tonne in the previous year. The price of aluminium, which is required for making almost everything from soda cans to aeroplane components, had stabilised after reaching a 13-year high of US$3,221 during the third quarter, due to the supply concerns caused by China’s power crunch. In order to decrease the pressure on the power grid, aluminium smelters in China were asked to limit or stop their production. In addition, worldwide producers were also asked to reduce...

MISIS researchers in collaboration with Russian experts develops 400°C resistant aluminium alloy

Researchers at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST MISIS) collaborated with other Russian experts to develop a low-cost aluminium alloy that can resist temperatures up to 150°C higher than its counterparts. The material, according to the experts who developed it, would drastically lower the weight and carbon footprint of new rail trains, aeroplanes, and other technology. The Journal of Alloys and Compounds has published their study. In practically all conditions, including the atmosphere, seas, freshwater, many chemical solutions, and most foodstuffs, aluminium and most aluminum-based alloys are extremely corrosion resistant. Aluminium is widely used in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and other sectors because to these qualities, as well as its low specific gravity...

China plans to peak carbon emissions by 2030, more shortfalls anticipated: Industry analysts

The Chinese power intense metals manufacturing sector straps under the oppression of a national power catastrophe, while the govt. sustains a restriction on smelting to achieve emissions targets. Besides the retrench of magnesium production, the other most power-intensive metal aluminium manufacturing sector in China has encountered a 2.3 million tonne downfall since the outset of the energy crisis in September 2021, when extensive power restriction dashed the nation during a rally to slash carbon emissions and diminish power generation. The price of aluminium touched and crossed $3,000 per tonne to a 13-year high in October 2021, the highest mark since 2008. However, before attaining the milestone, aluminium was usually priced in between $1,500 to $2,000 per tonne, though it has cooled...
