North American aluminum demand rises 3.5% in H1 2026 as imports offset domestic supply decline

North American aluminum demand returned to growth in the first half of 2026, but the recovery has exposed a widening gap between market consumption and domestic production. Rising imports of semi-fabricated aluminum products, particularly sheet, have supported regional demand as shipments from US and Canadian producers continue to weaken. According to preliminary industry estimates, aluminum demand across the United States and Canada increased 3.5% Year-on-Year through June 2026, reaching an estimated 13.57 billion pounds (6.16 million metric tonnes), compared with 13.12 billion pounds (5.95 million metric tonnes) during the corresponding period of 2025. The improvement marks a reversal from the previous year's contraction, although imports rather than stronger domestic mill shipments...

Japan's primary aluminium imports witnessed 30% downfall in Jan-Aug on the grounds of sluggish demand

On September 28, 2023, according to trade data released by the Ministry of Finance, Japan stated that the country's August imports of primary aluminium declined by 16 per cent compared to the previous year, totalling 95,630 tonnes. This marks a cumulative decrease of 30 per cent for the year. As reported by traders and aluminium manufacturers, Asia's largest importer of the lightweight metal used in transportation, construction, and packaging has experienced a significant decrease. This decline can be attributed to slow demand within the domestic construction sector and a lacklustre performance in export markets. The Japanese imports of primary aluminium ingots for the period from January to August totalled 711,627 tonnes, marking a 30 per cent decrease compared to the previous year. A...

India’s requirement for aluminium intensifies amidst global economic crisis and dismay

India is the only country that stands out from the rest of the world regarding aluminium production and consumption amidst a down market projecting a slow recovery in 2023. The government's strong emphasis on new infrastructure, particularly green energy, drives domestic consumption and overall stability for aluminium prices. India is currently the second-largest aluminium producer and third-largest consumer globally. However, industry analysts predict that India's aluminium demand will double within the next ten years, which could significantly impact both short-term and long-term aluminium price projections. Despite slowing global growth, including in China, which is expected to lower demand and pull down aluminium prices, experts believe that there are no such apprehensions in India....
