Primary aluminium weekly: Speira announces closure of primary production at its Rheinwerk facility; Rio Tinto's Kitimat aluminium smelter begins production

EDITED BY : 5MINS READ

Last week was a very exciting time for AL Circle with the rebranding experience in play. Overall, the aluminium industry, too, saw a few gut-wrenching events. A fire broke out at Rusal-owned Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter on Wednesday. A transformer caught fire in a 50 square metre area. No casualties have been reported yet, and the cause of the fire is unknown. German company Speira is closing down its primary aluminium production after 62 years, with the last potlines scheduled to shut by December 2023. The Rheinwerk facility will be transformed into a recycling-based foundry, aligning with sustainability and a circular economy. Speira aims to reduce its environmental footprint and conserve resources. On the brighter side, Rio Tinto's Kitimat aluminium smelter is now fully operational after a 17-month restart due to a strike in 2021. The smelter has achieved its maximum production capacity of 432,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, marking the first instance of such achievement since 2018. Rio Tinto plans to celebrate the smelter's 70th anniversary next year. Shanghai Metals Market was closed due to the Mid-Autumn and the National Day Holidays, while the LME aluminium benchmark price shed US$78 per tonne or 3.41 per cent over the week from US$2,286 per tonne on October 2 to close at US$2,208 per tonne on October 6.
