
The Aluminum Association, in cooperation with the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported primary aluminium production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was at an annual rate of 3.83 million tonnes during September 2018, advancing 11,272 tpy (+0.3%) over the August 2018 rate of 3.82 million tonnes.
The production rate in the U.S. was up 4.4 per cent m/m, while the Canadian rate fell 1.0 per cent. On a YoY comparison, the North American annual rate was down 2.8 per cent from September 2017. Actual production in September 2018 totalled 314,921 tonnes.

According to the Association, net new orders of aluminium mill products or semi-finished products for September 2018 dropped 9.6 per cent from August 2018. Orders for flat roll products (sheet, plate, can stock and foil) were off 8.3 per cent, while orders for extruded products decreased 17.1 per cent and orders for redraw rod rose 7.1 per cent. YoY the orders dropped slightly from September 2017. Domestic orders were up 4.2 per cent through September over YTD 2017.
Shipments of can stock by domestic producers were off 2.6 per cent YoY to 314.2 million pounds during September 2018. Month on month, shipments decreased 7.2 per cent from the August 2018 total of 338.5 million pounds. YTD shipments through September 2018 dropped 1.6 per cent to 1.37 million tonnes from YTD 2017. Compared to September 2017, domestic shipments of can stock to U.S. markets rose slightly while exports decreased 19.9 per cent.
Estimated net shipments of Aluminum Sheet and Plate by U.S. and Canadian producers increased 6.2 per cent YoY to 741.4 million pounds during September 2018. Compared to the previous month, shipments decreased 4.8 per cent from the August 2018 revised total of 778.4 million pounds. YTD shipments through September 2018 were up 3.1 per cent to 3 million tonnes from the same period of 2017.
