

The Opposition Spokesperson on Energy and Telecommunications, Phillip Paulwell, emphasised that the economic advantages that can be received from Jamaica after establishing a rare earth minerals industry. He added that this could create exciting opportunities for technological progress as well.
{alcircleadd}In a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee, Paulwell highlighted the growing global demand for rare earth elements. As per him, Jamaica has a good opportunity to tap into these valuable minerals found in bauxite residue, which is a byproduct of the country’s well-established alumina industry.

The statement of the People’s National Party (PNP), which was released on Friday, reflected that Paulwell raised a question during the discussions about what specific actions are being taken to seize this opportunity. He also inquired whether Jamaica plans to develop the capability to process and extract these minerals locally instead of just exporting raw materials.
Paulwell states, "Rare earth elements are critical to the technologies that power the modern global economy, including renewable energy systems, advanced electronics and electric vehicles. Jamaica must position itself to benefit from this growing demand."

In the same statement, Paulwell also talked about the importance of providing more robust support and investment in communities situated in bauxite-producing regions.
Owing to this, Paulwell commented, "With record levels currently being seen in the aluminium and alumina markets, it is only fair that the communities that host mining activities and face ongoing environmental challenges see greater investment and tangible benefits."

Additionally, He also noted that these communities have been playing a role towards the country’s economic growth over the years and really deserve more focus in development planning and national policy.
To this, Paulwell comments, "Jamaica must think strategically about the future of its natural resources. Developing a rare earth minerals industry while ensuring stronger support for bauxite communities can help create new economic opportunities and ensure that our natural wealth benefits the Jamaican people."
