Paulwell to tour rare elements project site at Jamaica Bauxite Institute

The Rare Earth Elements Pilot Project site, located on the grounds of the Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) in Kingston is complete and will be toured by Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell on Tuesday.
Japan-based Nippon Light Metal (NLM) in collaboration with the JBI established the pilot plant to extract rare elements from bauxite mining residue.
The pilot project set up for an approximate US$5 million expects to determine the scope for a commercial rare earth extraction venture in Jamaica and to assess any possible environmental impact.
Ground was broken for the plant in early February 2013, and construction was completed in early September.
NLM last year showed interest in the extraction of rare earth elements from the bauxite residue stored the ‘red mud lakes’ across the island where they believe there are “high concentrations”.
