Odisha Mining Corp. takes home 5-star rating for two mines from Indian Bureau of Mines

In a noteworthy step towards sustainable utilisation of resources across the country, Odisha Mining Corporation’s (OMC) Daitari iron ore mines and Kodingamali bauxite mines have received a "5 Star Rating" from the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) for 2023–24. This award was presented by Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy at a ceremony in Jaipur on July 7. This recognition is not only a testament to OMC’s operational excellence but also a progressive development in the context of the country's mining narrative.

Redefining mining beyond extraction

Mining, although a crucial economic activity, has always been condemned for causing environmental damage, community displacement, and exploitation. From an economic perspective, OMC's Daitari iron ore and Kodingamali bauxite mines challenge traditional narratives on the role of mining. These mines are different in that they placed a significant emphasis on scientific mine planning, limited ecological damage, and community engagement programmes.

Awarded by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, the 5-Star Rating Award signifies that these mines have established benchmarks for joining advanced technology with an unbroken commitment to social responsibility. The award confirms OMC's status as a national leader in responsible mining, creating an example for both public and private sector actors.

Aligning mining with national priorities

OMC's accomplishment strongly aligns with India's larger policy goals around self-reliant India, environmental responsibility, and equitable development. OMC has combined efficiency and sustainability to represent the future of Indian mining as a sector that not only supports industrial development but also supports local communities and protects biodiversity.

The Daitari Iron Ore Mines and Kodingamali Bauxite Mines have implemented innovative approaches like advanced dust suppression systems, real-time environmental monitoring, and progressive land reclamation. According to the judges from IBM, these initiatives are impressive examples of mining operations in harmony with nature.

Catalysing local development

Apart from environmental metrics, these mines have demonstrated a commitment to community development. Welfare initiatives have included healthcare programmes, support for education, and infrastructure development for nearby villages. Such efforts build a strong social licence to operate, an increasingly vital aspect of modern mining governance.

OMC wants to extend these successful examples through its whole set of operations and thus build Odisha as a model of responsible mineral development in India. Investment is increasing in a mineral-rich territory in Odisha. This responsible mineral development model is an important blueprint for potentially achieving a realistic balance between economic aspirations and commitments to ecological and social elements.

Advancing inclusive, sustainable progress together

The 5-star rating, initiated by the Ministry of Mines, is India's most prestigious acknowledgement for mining leaseholders demonstrating excellence in three key areas: scientific mining, environmental reclamation, and stakeholder participation. That OMC received the 5-star rating for two mines in a single year speaks volumes about their planning capacity.

OMC's recognition signals a new era where mining corporations can contribute to economic and ecological wealth, demonstrating how mining can promote inclusive, sustainable progress.
