Norwegian metal recycler Metallco uses Steinert sorting machines to extract reusable aluminium

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Metallco AS, a Norwegian company, dominates the non-ferrous metal and steel scrap recycling market. They collect and sort all types of scrap metal to produce new aluminium at their in-house smelting plant.

They've installed the latest key technologies in metal sorting, including two Steinert EddyC eddy current separators and several X-ray sorting systems to aid in this process. Additionally, they're implementing a Steinert LSS®| LIBS sorting system to separate aluminium by alloy type.

Metallco's CEO, Laurie Feinberg, and Øyvind Frebrich, CEO of the sorting plant, are confident that Steinert sorting technology helps them overcome the challenges posed by the international business of recycling metals.

In the journey to find expert technology partners, Feinberg evaluated various solutions and was taken aback by Steinert's product profile: "We evaluated four different suppliers and, in the end, we found Steinert to be the one which was competitive in price and superior in experienced quality. That's why we chose Steinert, which so far has proved to be a good choice."

"These machines don't need a lot of maintenance and servicing. This means they're very reliable, and they simply work and work and work for us, which is very good for our company," Feinberg asserted the machines are extremely reliable.

She went on to add: "The first step of metal recovery at Metallco is shredding the scrap that is delivered. Then, the metal fraction goes into the sorting plant that we just purchased from Steinert. Here, we sort into heavy and aluminium fractions. Today, we separate cast from wrought aluminium. Soon, with the LIBS machine, we will also be able to separate alloys. This makes it the ultimate solution."

Feinberg points out that shorter lifespans for consumer goods are becoming increasingly common, leading to more waste for recycling. Furthermore, government regulations require manufacturers to use recycled materials, resulting in an increased demand for Metallco's products.

The company's impressive machine fleet includes magnetic and eddy current separators and sensor-based sorting systems that use cutting-edge sensor-driven detection technologies such as X-ray transmission, X-ray fluorescence, and optical detection systems. They've installed two Steinert XSS T EVO 5.0 X-ray transmission sorting systems connected in series to ensure high-purity extraction.

The CEO of the sorting division, Øyvind Frebrich, exemplified: "We have installed a Steinert XSS T downstream of the eddy current separator to separate the aluminium from the heavy metals. We use the second machine, also a Steinert XSS T, to separate the aluminium into cast and wrought aluminium. We achieve a purity of more than 99% here."

"There are between 35 and 40 companies in the group, and I have been working here for almost 35 years. This has been a long journey. When I started here, there were around 17 or 18 of us. We had only one location that we rented. Today, we have 250 employees working at 25 sites, all of which we own," Laurie Feinberg confidently mentioned.

The Metallco Group's position as Norway's top metal recycling market leader directly results from their intelligent investments and decisions. Their ability to consistently produce the standard quality of recycling material their customers require highlights the importance of a trustworthy technology partner for a company's strategic development, as emphasized by Øyvind Frebrich, the CEO of the sorting plant.

World Recycled Aluminium Market Analysis

"With open communications, we have overcome sorting challenges and are now producing better quality aluminium. It is important for me to say that the technology from Steinert is one reason why we are where we are today," a Metallco statement read out loud.
