In May 2021, alumina production in North America stood at 329,000 tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month increase of only 2,000 tonnes or 0.61 per cent, found the International Aluminium Institute. In April, alumina production in North America was 327,000 tonnes, 3.25 per cent less than 338,000 tonnes in March.
On a year-on-year calculation, North America’s alumina production in May, however, stood 4.91 per cent lower than 346,000 tonnes.
In the first five months of 2021, production in North America totalled 1.642 million tonnes, down by 1.38 per cent from 1.665 million tonnes.
In South America, alumina output in May 2021 came in at 99,000 tonnes, which was up by 4,000 tonnes or 4.21 per cent from 95,000 tonnes in April. On a year-on-year basis, South America’s alumina production in May grew 35.62 per cent from 73,000 tonnes.
During January-May, South America produced 473,000 tonnes of alumina in total compared to 423,000 tonnes during the same period last year.
