According to the latest report from Aluminum Association, Aluminum net shipments (including exports) by domestic U.S. and Canadian facilities totalled an estimated 934,853 tonnes during May, a slight increase over the May 2018 total of 933,493 tonnes.
Shipments of aluminium mill products or semi-finished products fell 4.1 per cent YoY to 633,668 tonnes in May. Shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and destructive uses advanced 10.5 per cent year-over-year, totalling 301,185 tonnes. Through the first five months of 2019, preliminary producer shipments dropped 1.5 per cent from the same period of 2018 to stand at an estimated 4.6 million tonnes.
According to the Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” for May 2019, orders declined 1.9 per cent month on month. Orders for flat roll products (sheet, plate, can stock and foil) dropped slightly from the previous month. Orders for extruded products were off 5.3 per cent month on month.
Total orders for semi-finished products were down 10.4 per cent YoY in May. On average, orders recorded by domestic producers through May 2019 were down 6.8 per cent from YTD 2018.
May inventory levels stood at an estimated 1.6 million tonnes, slightly down from the previous month, but an increase of 8.8 per cent YoY.
